May 28, 2008 - Looking Back

The Schedule page is updated to better reflect what actually happened last weekend. The general BIYF Entertainment pages (Master List, By Year List) are also updated. Audio files and "over black" images are added to the Media page. The first of the audio files is added to BIYF Radio.

May 27, 2008 - Archiving Begins

Images from the KenDerrpes Outbreak and the Letdown Lager are added to the Media page. The KenDerrpes Store also goes public.

May 22, 2008 - Where, when, what, huh?

Emails regarding Friday plans circulate and recirculate. They finally settle into something resembling a plan on the Schedule page.

May 21, 2008 - No Music, but "Musical"

Rollerballer contributes to "The Inevitable Letdown" by informing us that there's no traveling music for this year. He does offer this glimpse of the upcoming festival's entertainment in compensation, however. Wow.

May 20, 2008 - Are ya chicken?

The Bricker requests a show of hands regarding chicken/fish preferences for Saturday's evening meal. Starbuck suggests a Hivemind Poll might be useful for such a count. Please only vote once per person.

Starbuck "trips down memory lane" and notes that 2008 looks to be substantially more injury-free than 2007 was. At least it is so far and we hope the trend will continue...

Zardoz and NOTE's store merchandise arrived today. The printing looks good, though NOTE could have been more pleased with the appropriate sizing of her items. It's never a smooth ride with CafePress, is it? Here's a teaser image:

May 19, 2008 - Qualified, or Over-Qualified?

The Bricker sends an email that ponders our qualifications.

"Not qualify? Dude, we pwn that list." says Rollerballer. "All your list are belong to us. we're in ur list, pwning your qualifications."

Plus, Zardoz and NOTE's merchandise makes past Davenport:

Looks like everyone's stuff has shipped, by the way.

The Schedule continues to be updated as more information becomes available. Keep checking back (and checking email).

This year's festival finally makes it on the BIYF Calendar (along with many months of BIYFy goodness as I finally get the calendar updated for 2008).

May 18, 2008 - Nuts and Bolts

Zardoz sends out a note to clarify arrival and departure times and firm up Friday's and (possibly Sunday's) plans. Also a Hivemind News category gets added for other BIYF 2008 News.

May 17, 2008 - With 3 or 4 days to spare.

The "lean and mean" (read "Spartan and hastily constructed") BIYF XI website goes live and the temp image gets moved to the Media page.

May 16, 2008 - Irish Shakespeare Alien Skulls?

Discussion occurs over what to do on the evening of BIYF Friday. Check the Schedule for some proposed options. Also, the BIYF X website and photos get archived and a temp page goes up for the BIYF XI website.

Rejected options for BIYF Friday included A Midsummer Night's Dream and Paul and Lorraine. - ed. 5/28/08

May 8, 2008 - A Simple Survey

May 7, 2008 - Too Many Catchphrases

Zardoz sends out the third of three preliminary BIYF XI branding images and foolishly assumes he can rest for a bit. Nope, times a' wasting. Check out all of them on the Media page.

May 6, 2008 - Dance, Art Monkey, Dance

Zardoz sends out the second of three preliminary BIYF XI branding images. And then he sends out a revised one. And then he sends out a second revision. Check out all of them on the Media page.

May 5, 2008 - Mounting and Branding

Starbuck proposes a solution to the perpetual "How are we going to mount the projector?" issue and Zardoz sends out the first of three preliminary BIYF XI branding images. Check out all of them on the Media page.

May 2, 2008 - A Call to Arms

Zardoz sends out the official "call to arms" memo to the Collective:

To Everything There Is a Season.
Sent Friday, May 2, 2008 - 11:36 am by Zardoz

BIYF XI: A Brief Manifesto.
Best read as per William Shatner.

Spring is a time of renewal. A time to wake from the long winter slumber and stretch one's legs on the softball fields of the northlands. A time to shake off the doldrums of ordinary life and ponder the possibilities of freshly pressed t-shirts and musty b-movies. A time to celebrate the breaking of Winter's tyranny and prepare the smoker for rack upon rack of ribs with a "Hey-dol, Merry-dol, Ring-a-ding-dillo."

It is a time for Passion.

Sometimes passion is a slow burn, smoldering for long months of movie voting and facial hair cultivation, which builds to an inevitable and unequivocal climax with the sound of a broom handle thwacking into a Darth Vader helmet that explodes to reveal, not the face of Luke Skywalker, but packets of nerds which fly free in a slow-motion frenzy of post-celebratory delight. A perfect storm...

Other times, passion is harbored close to one's heart. No outward signs, no trappings even hinting at what lies beneath. Months might pass with barely a post on the blog of one's face to betray the commitment or the fire that is felt. Nary a Twitter. An outsider might mistake this lack of verbosity for apathy or even sloth, but the fire is still there.

Why does this happen? I can't say for sure. Is it the fear that the present may pale in comparison to the specter of the past? The fear that the lightning may never be captured in a bottle again? The fear that the peak has been reached? The fear... of the Inevitable Disappointment?

Perhaps, but I posit that there is cause for hope. Though this year's festival so far lacks the typical trappings of your standard, run-of-the-mill BIYF Festival, I do not believe that it will fail to, in the immortal words of our own Trogdor, "bring the Passion."

The signs are everywhere, if you know where to look:

  • Jeri has, on multiple occasions, expressed her excitement about being able to attend BIYF this year.

  • Dave carries a list of potential viewing options in his wallet with him at all times in case inspiration strikes.

  • Phoebe's Dad is keeping an eye out for possible BIYF-worthy movies and has already made a suggestion for this year.

  • Tom may well have something new brewing for this year...

  • Christine, not the world's biggest horror movie fan, has brought a Zombie Stripper film to the attention of The Collective.

  • Patient Zero has been designated for this year. Oh, you'll find out. Just wait.

I tell you, the passion - not to mention the contagion - is there.

Rollerballer, true to his name, has started the official ball rolling with his lolBIYF creations and now it's up to the rest of us to bring whatever we can to bear on Memorial Day Weekend 2008. We may never again see the Perfect Storm of 2007, but there's no reason this can't be 1993: Best BIYF Ever™ all over again.

Drink Beer!

While there were many responses, one in particular stood out from the crowd:

Re: To Everything There Is a Season.

It is a time for passion, baby. I applaud Bill and his testimonial to spring and renewal.

I feel a little obligation to get the record straight. I didn't attend the most passionate BIYF ever. No, instead, I was left behind to attend the graduation of another BIYFers nephew's graduation. (That BIYFer shall
remain nameless.)

I did not attend the great night in Chicago as did many in the group. One BIYFer stated that it was one of the best nights in their life. I
organized it, but alas my load got too heavy. (Literally)

Tonight, I see another night of fun pass before my eyes as I have a little bundle of joy with a double ear infection. I have seen many events come and go where I'm left to hear about the joy, the fun, and the memories that many say shall last forever.

(ed. Fortunately, this cleared up and she was indeed able to attend a Jonathan Coulton concert in Madison, WI with the rest of the Iowa BIYFers.)

Yet, God as my witness, I always do the right thing. I have put my family first. I like to think that I have built up enought karma to last until 2013. But alas, as a result, I have not had any fun for over 2 frickin' years.

This time, I shall not be left behind. I will be present. I will drink beer and other loaded beverages. If the children know what is good for them, they will not even release a sniffle. I'm not sure if my mood and tone is coming through. So, again, let's get the record straight.

There shall be no let down - damn it. There's going to be no whimpering about "where's the passion!" Put the fucking lightning back in the bottle and find the fire. There is hope everyone, because 2008 is the year where I shall "Bring on the Mead."

Bride of Trogdor

P.S. By the way, I'm not bitter.

May 1, 2008 - What else can I say?

Blendergirl makes a viewing suggestion: Zombie Strippers.

Truly, what else needs to be said?

April 25, 2008 - Less than a month...

"Less than a month to the inevitable letdown. I, for one, can't wait!"

With those words, Rollerballer kicked off this year's pre-BIYF hype. In addition he sent out a number of lolBIYF pictures to entertain and delight the masses (with one unrequested addition from Zardoz). Check them out on the Media page.
