And I, of course, am an Iowan.
I thought I'd suggest that an easy food for Saturday (or Friday for us dining together) would be corn on the cob, which is all over the grocery stores lately.

Every journey begins with a single step. Unfortunately, the first step to many of my travels involves walking out to the trash, cleaning the litter box, vacuuming the floor, doing the laundry, washing the dishes, or mowing the lawn so that the place is habitable when I return. I do not begrudge these tasks, for they make returning home a much more pleasant experience. I merely state facts. I would clean a thousand litter boxes if it would speed me on my way to BIYF more quickly. Not over a thousand, though.
Ruth and I will be heading north to Rochester this afternoon where we will stay tonight and likely dine at our favorite Chinese restaurant where we have dined during so many of our trips between Iowa and Minnesota. We'll have our cell phones and I'm bringing my Mac, so we should be reachable during this time. Let's try to touch base tonight or tomorrow during the day to figure out where, when, and if to meet. I've tweaked the schedule slightly to reflect times, etc. that I've heard mentioned. Please let me know your plans, corrections, ideas, or additions for the weekend schedule and I'll update it accordingly. It's almost here!

The smoothie maker is quivering with anticipation! The menu of Blender Drinks is official, and non-perishable products are prepared to migrate. For those who choose to participate in celebrating BIYF through the consumption of Blender Drinks, here's a sample of what we have in store (in no particular order):
* Abilene - A sweet breakfast drink of orange juice, apricot nectar, rum, and a splash of grenadine. A lovely, light start to the day.
* Communicator - Yes, it was selected for the name. Sounds yummy, too. Dark rum, Galliano, and dark creme de cacao, blended until smooth. A touch of creme can be added to cut the edge of the alcohol...or not. Dessert anyone?
* Mickey's Fin - A tropical, fruity drink of dark rum, coconut rum, creme de bananas, and the juices of the pineapple, orange and grapefruit. (Read more...)

It gives me great pleasure to announce that I have uncapped and dumped the two "Golden Monkey" beers (voted worst beer of best BIYF ever, making it perhaps the Jedi of the Star Wars Universe) down the drain. How many nights I thought, "will I finally have to drink those awful beers? Or will I go to the store?" Now, I don't have to worry about it...I just go to the store.
This morning Jake (my little beer buddy!) and I went to Syrduks to purchase the Beer for BIYF8. We spent a good hour, me searching the labels for that special something that would make it worthy of selection, he mostly crushing little plastic sample cups and throwing them on the floor.
I took a different tact from last year. I selected a much much broader group of beers but less depth in each type. So, for example, I bought a whole bunch of single beers from the "Cool label, large bottle, from a foriegn country" category. If they suck, not much lost. (Read more...)

The Bricker sent out the BIYF 8 Movie Challenge (tm) last night. While it will be difficult for many of us (and 'by many of us' I mean 'me'), I say we should go for it. Heck, it goes well with the alternate title (and merchandise) for this year's festival: Revenge of the BIYF. Here's the note:
---------------------------------------
Hi all,
Suggestion: don't go see the new Star Wars vehicle. Enjoy it as part of BIYF.
It will be hard for a few of you. We need to know if this pact will hold. If anyone breaks the pact then the movie is rendered useless (in my opinion) for the collective during BIYF8.
Please advise your status on the pact.

To everything there is a Season.
Glorious Summer, replete with its softball, patriotic mass-consumption festivals, and eagerly anticipated nuptials ...
Majestic Autumn, time of the colorful pageantry that is Hawkeye Football ...
Cruel Winter, barren save the occasional bowl game or movie premiere; a harsh and unyielding ruler ...
and finally
Exultant Spring, when we gather together in the North to celebrate the breaking of Winter's tyranny with ale and diverting amusements of dubious quality. Yes, Spring; The season when we turn our eyes upwards, raise our glasses to the sky, and shout "As Shatner is my witness, I thought Krull would be better than that. (Read more...)

And bringing the nick-name-less wife!
If this be true, then I can see no reason why BIYF8 shouldn't be the very best BIYF EVER.
Seriously, the BEST EVER!

OK, so maybe Walter Koenig isn't coming to BIYF 8 (as far as you know), but that doesn't mean that you should miss out! Memorial Day weekend will be upon us before we know what hit us and I wanted to take a cue from The Bricker and officially get the ball rolling about the whos, whats, and whens of the 2005 BIYF Festival while there's still time left to adjust schedules and plans.
Oh sure, we could assume, for example, that the regular posts will be filled - Jim as Minister of Beer, Dave as Benevolent BIYF Movie Dictator, Christine as The Blending Queen, Bill as BIYF Mascot (Poster Child?), et. al. - but that would severely cut back on traffic to the site. Goodness knows we can't afford to have that happen. (Read more...)
