It's No Mansquito...

. It's SyFy. It's Corman. It's Sharktopus.

Wow... just wow. I think the Collective needs to become a hired consulting group for the channel previously known as SciFi. Seriously, give us an hour and our combined knowledge of crappy genre TV and film and we'll spit out enough ideas to last them through the last Saturday of the century.

Not of This Earth: of Barsoom!

Posted by Rollerballer on Wed, Nov 25th 2009, 10:20 am

. Or should I say "Not of Jasoom?

Yes, with the big-budget Disney version of John Carter of Mars on the way, someone realized that ERB's early works, including the first five Barsoom books, are in the public domain.

Enter Asylum Films, a company who specializes in having direct-to-DVD ripoffs on the shelves just as blockbusters hit the screen. (Read more...)

Proud? Ashamed? Not Sure.

Posted by Rollerballer on Wed, Sep 30th 2009, 4:54 pm

. Over at Rotten Tomatoes They've compiled a list of the 100 Worst-Reviewed Movies of the Last Ten Years that they're calling:

The Worst of the Worst

(Note that they do not include the hyphen in worst-reviewed thereby changing the meaning somewhat.)

ANYWAY! I'm not sure how to feel; I have only seen one of these movies. Not that I necessarily want to see Daddy Daycare, but there are a number of sci-fi films on the list. I have tried to watch two more of them but was unable to bear them. I'm so weak!

So. (Read more...)

Colorful Points of Light

Posted by Zardoz on Fri, Sep 11th 2009, 12:02 pm

. So does anyone else find it disturbing that actual space does occasionally look almost exactly like Starcrash space?

I just thought they were using Christmas lights because they were cheap and colorful. Who knew that there might have been research involved?

It's Not Turkish...

Posted by Zardoz on Fri, Sep 11th 2009, 10:51 am

. ...but then I don't speak Spanish either. Wired gives us some BIYF 2010 options, just follow the link below.

Bad Sci-Fi? Check.
"Sexy" not "Horrifyingly Nude" Aliens? Check.
Mexican Wrestlers? Check.

Just look at this sample:

“Santo, the main star of the luchador genre, combats Martians using his beefy body and expert wrestling powers plus scientific knowledge and cultural sensitivity.”

"In the movie, platinum-bewigged, Mylar-clad extraterrestrials backed by scantily dressed females announce their impending invasion with apocalyptic television broadcasts, then teletransport themselves to private homes and public sporting events in order to vaporize some humans and kidnap others. Heroic masked wrestler Santo comes to the rescue."

District Nine

Posted by Sandman on Mon, Aug 31st 2009, 7:46 am

. As always I am a little behind the times. Blendergirl and I went to see District 9 last weekend. We left feeling a little dazed. We had both heard good things about it bet were not at all prepared for something so 'real'.

I think we liked it although it certainly messed with the comfort zone.

the Alien effects were great.

Whaaa? Take Two

Posted by Zardoz on Mon, Aug 24th 2009, 7:45 am

. So it looks like the Bryan Singer-helmed "new-Battlestar-but-not-related-to-the-real-new-Battlestar" follow-up film may not be on as much of a fast track as previously suspected. Instead, something equally baffling is being suggested. More below...

Zombie

Posted by Sandman on Mon, Jun 29th 2009, 8:17 am

. This weekend Blendergirl and I picked up a couple movies. I had been wanting to see Gran Torino. (Aside: Clint Eastwood is just maybe my pick for Celeb Dad) We also picked up Fanboys. Funny funny movie, a definite must watch. We picked up YesMan cause Jim Carrey is always kid friendly.

That is when we saw it. Just sitting there. Minding its own business. Not one copy but four. we had been joking about it for months and so we grabbed it. We really couldn't help it.

So last night after sending the kids upstairs Blendergirl and I watched Zombie Strippers. It was everything it was advertised to be and more or less. Lots and lots of nudity, lots and lots of gore, lots and lots of naked gore and to round it out some heavy handed political needling and bad acting.

Zombie Strippers may have been as good as Nude on the Moon.

limited release!

Posted by Sandman on Mon, Jun 15th 2009, 3:14 pm

. I wish this was coming to a theater near me! How can a Nazi Zombie movie be a limited release? If only Bruce Campbell was in it...

First thoughts

Posted by Starbuck on Mon, May 25th 2009, 8:05 pm

. So as Anders and I debrief over the various movies/activities/general contented afterglow- a few stray thoughts:

NOTM- she is very reassured by the reaction of the male members of the collective to this bomb. Her belief in the possibility of rational thought is restored.

Flash- so frakking cool. Hot Hail all around.

BSG- TOS-TR (The Original Series- Theatrical Release): ugh

Howard The Duck: this engendered the most discussion. We have reached two conclusions- one firm, the other needs some work.

1) this movie would have worked if the filmmakers had realized that what they had on their hands was another Buckaroo Banzai (we feel strongly on this one)

2) what they THOUGHT they had was another (and here's where we're less certain) Back To The Future

Thanks again for another Banner Year! No '06ing this time around! Hope Trogdor is feeling better!
